Graduated from Rutgers University, Cathy Young began writing for The Detroit News and started working on her first book, Growing up in Moscow. She writes columns for Reason and The Boston Globe (weekly) and she is the author of many other books and articles. Her writing commonly espouses equality feminism. She is also a research associates at The Cato Institute in Washington D.C. This article in particular is also one of her work in presenting the equality of feminism through abortion debate. Depicted from the column Reason on April 2003, this article (Aborting equality: men’s odd place in the abortion debate) credibility is substantial in reviewing the legal abortion debate. Although the article was depicted in the year 2003, I find the article substantial after a thorough researching other feminism columns. This article is based on statistical review, real life interview, facts from credible sources and through her understanding on the feminism psychological aspects; I believe that her participation in his article will eventually support my topic in legalizing abortion.
Essentials gender equality from this article eventually support on how feminism point of view, their lifestyles compared to the men and a stronger reason why legalizing abortion can bring a better equality towards women. Between the sexes, the article shows us on the decisions does not entirely up to the women. Basic decisions on unwanted pregnancies sees pro-choicer see legal abortion as an essential to gender equality. (Women have reproductive rights, and men have reproductive responsibilities) spreading the option and legal rights on the women’s choice on whether to end a pregnancy based on undervalues from motherhood, irresponsible boyfriends. And often, woman is the one that pay the higher price when their irresponsible boyfriend is not ready for fatherhood. Legal debates and arguments often involves more on the women but not on the men where the men get off easily so to speak when abortion comes in as an issue. But is that true? Men’s reproductive rights also surfaces in largely symbolic legal debates. Is man all to blame? This article practically let us judge that ourselves.
We always see that problems lie ahead for the feminine aspects when it comes to abortion. We always blame on the man when unwanted pregnancies happen, irresponsible boyfriends which fled when it comes to paying child support, rape, incest, and abusive man on vulnerable innocent women undeniably put on the guilty verdict on the man responsible. But what happens when the man is ready for the baby but not the woman?
Man and woman have the rights to enjoy their sexual freedom equally. But what happen when the irresponsible ones is the woman? What happen when the woman actually just wants to enjoy their sexual freedom and not want to commit themselves in a serious motherhood responsibility? Through gender equality, shouldn’t we consider that circumstances too? So when it comes to abortion, who decision is it to terminate a pregnancy? Untold stories or excruciating personal stories may be involved in making the decision.
From my observation on this article, legalizing abortion should also really consider the after impacts on both the man and also the women’s aspect. There is maybe silent screams from the man when the woman is so irresponsible and they are forcing the men to bear all the consequences. From the article, there are also men that are devastated when their partners terminates a pregnancy without consulting them. Looking at the after effects over whether we should be pointing fingers when a legalized abortion is an excuse tool for the woman also. We should improvise when legal abortions can also help protect the men because when an unwanted pregnancy occurs, the women has to go on the painstaking procedures and its illegal for the men to leave the women to perform an unsafe abortion. But is that what a men want? Are they consulted? Are they even aware? So could we blame all of them except for those rapist and abusive men’s? (Given biological realities, it may be impossible to come up with a solution that wouldn't be unfair to someone. The current situation is indeed inequitable to men).
